How specialized ink can tell you when food has been safely processed


If you work in the food industry, the risk of contaminated food is a major concern. At Hammer Packaging, our role in High Pressure Processing (HPP) seeks to eliminate contaminated or spoiled food exposure before the product enters the marketplace.

What is HPP?

HPP is a procedure that uses extreme amounts of pressure to kill any harmful bacteria, such as yeast or mold, from packaged food products including dairy or processed meats. While chemical additives and thermal pasteurization have been the standard of the past, HPP limits contamination risk as all food is packed prior to processing. HPP also extends product shelf life and ensures food’s natural characteristics, such as taste and texture, are retained.

Making the Mark

At Hammer Packaging, we use a specialized ink to track and indicate when a product has been fully processed and can proceed with production operations. This ink can be applied to a variety of label types, from pressure sensitive to shrink sleeves using any of our flexo presses.

The ink is printed clear onto the label substrate. During processing, once the package reaches between 25,000 to 50,000 psi, the clear ink will change color, showing the certified mark that the package is ready for the next phase of operation. After processing, if the product is exposed to temperatures exceeding safe storage limits, the ink will revert to clear signaling that the product needs to be quarantined to ensure overall food safety.

Ink with Impact

This process is ideal for meat, yogurt, juice, fruits and vegetables. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States, the assumed waste percentage in North America from the processing stage is 5 percent for meat, 2 percent for fruits and vegetables and 1.2 percent for milk. The use of this ink is a guarantee that food is viable and safe for consumption, which can help eliminate dangerous outbreaks and mass product recalls.
