Hammer Packaging Becomes Global Leader in VSOP

Hammer Packaging has recently installed their second Variable Sleeve Offset Printing (VSOP) press, making Hammer the first company worldwide to utilize multiple presses with the innovative VSOP technology. This press was custom configured for Hammer and features a 33.5” web and prints in 9 color offset. This press technology incorporates several environmentally friendly features, as well.

In 2006, Hammer installed its first VSOP web press. This positioned Hammer as the leader in the introduction of variable web offset use in North America. After bringing this break-through technology to market, Hammer has validated all the reasons why the technology is a superior alternative to gravure and flexographic printing. In 2009, with its second press in operation, Hammer Packaging’s sales are expected to exceed $100 million.

James E. Hammer, President & CEO, explains: “It is our stated goal to lead, not follow the industry. So, it is reassuring to see that our adoption of this technology has been validated by the market. We are confident in our decision to move into new, growing markets occupied by roll-fed labels and shrink sleeves. Packaging decoration of consumer products is clearly moving that way.”

The VSOP technology helps Hammer to both lower costs and increase the quality of its label products. Customers, such as Coca Cola and Pepsi, are able to decrease their costs when they run roll-fed labels and shrink sleeves on their own equipment. Hammer also points out that this press technology operates cleaner and uses less energy, all of which has a positive impact on the environment.
